Why Daddy Buzzkill, why??

Raising two kids around Y2K I began to notice things were not what they seemed with all the products on the shelves. Stuff each of us buys every single day. I started to see that the unspoken assumption "if we can buy it - it must be safe" was not actually true!

This is the United States of America after all. The land of free enterprise where we let the market decide. But the market is ignorant of the dangers of the 84,000 different chemicals that are in the products that we all use every day.

Most people believe that the government is silently and diligently protecting us from harm. After all, nobody's dropping dead (very often) from food borne illness anymore, cars don't often explode, airplanes rarely crash. So the whole system must be working, right?

Well, unfortunately, no. The system to protect consumers is definitely not working when it comes to consumer products. I'm talking about shampoo, cleaning products, perfume, clothes, and more.

Here's what's gone wrong: There's a thing called "regulatory capture" that means the fox is watching the henhouse. It works by heavy lobbying of Congress to weaken consumer projection laws and through the revolving door between regulatory agencies and the companies they are supposed to be overseeing.

So with just about everything at Target (and other stores of course) we should always be thinking "let the buyer beware." It's actually pretty daunting. The sheer number of chemicals, their relative risk, how they combine, etc. No one can be expected to keep track of all that to keep their family safe. That's why I'm here to help.

I'm here to tell you what is the most dangerous stuff. And to suggest what to buy instead to avoid poisoning yourself and your family over the long term.

Don't get me wrong. There's not much you can buy that can kill you overnight. You've probably never heard of subclinical affects. It's the principle that over time, one molecule at a time, everything that you breathe, eat, drink, or put on your skin takes you toward or away from health. Which way do you want to go?
